Implicit Bias in Healthcare: Working to Reduce Disparities in Care

Implicit bias is primarily seen as a subconscious attitude or belief held about social groups. This topic
has become increasingly important to understand given the frequency of individuals to freely and
openly express negative thoughts, feelings and behaviors regarding other racial groups. Implicit bias
is everywhere and affects everyone. We all have degrees of implicit bias. The impact of our implicit
bias on others, however, significantly depends on our social and professional roles in society. Bias held
by healthcare providers can significantly affect the life outcomes of large, vulnerable segments of
society. Dr. Judi Brown Clarke, the Vice President for Equity & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer for
Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Health System, will present a program that will help
attendees better understand the impact of IB in the healthcare space. She will help attendees
understand cognitive shortcuts used to process information, explain implicit and explicit biases and
provide examples. Dr. Brown Clarke will also help attendees assess the consequences of implicit
biases, identify strategies to raise awareness, and identify tools to mitigate biases in healthcare
settings, ultimately becoming a bias disruptor.
